Jean Baptiste Sewepagaham (JBS) High School was first renovated and had an addition added in 1992, at that time it was named after a former student – Jean Baptiste Sewepagaham (1878-1965).

JBS School is one of four schools in the Little Red River Cree Nation, located in Fox Lake, Alberta.  JBS is the only stand-alone high school within the Nation, serving students from grades 7 to 12.

Curriculum

Jean Baptiste Sewepagaham School follows the Alberta Curriculum in all subject areas.  The high school graduates who meet the guidelines and standards set by Alberta Education, are granted their High School Diplomas.

School High Lights

In addition to offering the core courses needed to graduate, JBS School also offers a multitude of programming that speaks to the students interests and overall development.  A few of the courses offered include: Cree Language classes for all grades, industrial arts, visual arts, photography, outdoor education, a Boys Winter Camp, and a Girls Spring Camp.

Computers

Our high school is setup to ensure that our students have the skills that they need to compete in the competitive workforce. We offer a computer education program designed to teach students how to use a multitude of Office software.

Outdoor Ed

One of our most popular programs this school year is Outdoor Education. Outdoor Education’s aim is to educate about the outdoors, in the outdoors. The course is mainly focused on modern topics and issues with the goal of having some traditional teachings included. This course will focus on four main areas: Wildlife, Wilderness Navigation, Outdoor Cooking Theory, and Outdoor Survival Skills. Students will increase their knowledge of safe practices outdoors while building self-esteem and working with small groups to achieve common goals.

Industrial Arts

The JBS School shop offers an introduction to basic knowledge and skills relevant to the trades and the Alberta workplace in general. The shop program includes a hands-on component aimed at developing proficiency with modern tools and provincial workplace safety practices. There is also an emphasis on forming career goals and acquiring an understanding of workers’ rights and responsibilities. More advanced courses introduce elements of design and material knowledge.

Extra-Curricular

We have a number of sports teams including; badminton, volleyball, cross country running, floor hockey, basketball, flag football, and track and field.  We also offer non-sport related clubs such as; gaming club, chess club, and reading club.

JBS is staying up-to- date with technology. All classes have smartboards, and shared iPads and Chromebooks for student use.

We have a number of programs for student support.  JBS has a Special Education Teacher, a Speech and Language Program, a High School Student Success Coach, Mental Health and Wellness Counsellor and a Credit Recovery Program.
